Dive Ex HMAS BrisbaneIt is now 2 and a half years on from the scuttling of the ex -HMAS Brisbane and we are very excited to report that the quality of the wreck dive site, just north of Mooloolaba, is fast becoming considered Australia's number one wreck site. The ex-HMAS Brisbane is a former Australian warship that lies off Mooloolaba, which is 100km (about 80 minutes) north of Brisbane by road. The ex-HMAS Brisbane site is 9km about 10 minutes by boat from the mouth of the Mooloolah River. Sunreef Dive is the leading dive centre servicing the wreck. Watch a video of diving the Brisbane. This magnificent 133 metre guided missile destroyer has settled perfectly upright on the sand bed in around 27 metres. Within weeks an assorted variety of marine life began to call the ex-HMAS Brisbane home with prolific growth of embryonic corals over most of the structure and schools of whiting, happy moments, yellowtail kingfish and cuttlefish happily cruising around the upper decks and underneath the stern. |
Now only 2 and a half years on, the amount of marine life is prolific and quite simply breathtaking. See large Bull nose rays, beautiful white spotted eagle rays, shovel nose rays and wobbegong sharks. Add turtles, octopus, large grouper to name a few. Swim through schools of bait fish as you cruise through the ship. The clarity of the water provides a consistent 15-20 metres visibility with water temperatures currently around 22 degrees celsius. Access inside the “Brisbane” is optimum with all internal areas offering three points of natural lighting with wide, open entry and exit swim throughs. Don’t forget too that the ex-HMAS Brisbane is the only purpose designed dive wreck in Australia where you can actually dive inside the engine and boiler rooms.

The “wreck” dive of the ex-HMAS Brisbane provides a unique opportunity for Open Water Divers to safely and easily explore this incredible site. With the top of the funnel only 3.5 metres below the surface and the multi-tiered superstructure and gun turrets on the main deck all within a maximum of 18 metres this “wreck” dive is one of the most easily accessible in the country.
PLEASE NOTE: All penetration divers must be accompanied by a dive guide and carry a torch !
Torch hire is available if necessary.
Wreck/Cave Specialty Divers may do independent full penetration after initial orientation dives with a guide.
Subsequent dives MUST BE with an equally qualified dive buddy and carry appropriate dive gear and torch.
